Altar frontal densely embroidered w/ silk threads in laid, couched & satin stitch depicting portrait of St. Francis at center w/ acts of charity & kindness in surrounding medallions including the miracle of crossing the Strait of Messina, polychrome florals including calla lilies, roses & tulips, cherubs & scrolls between medallions, particolored red, yellow & off-white silk fringe at left, right & lower edge & along upper register, lined in light blue silk, ties of off-white cotton or linen to reverse,43.5” x 104”, (wear/pulls, loss & discoloration, spot stains up to 0.5”, trim loss along top edge, minor shatter & discoloration to backing, 20” x 13” patch to back, discoloration/wear to fringe) Excellent. Provenance: Brooklyn Museum.
